DIAMOND LEAVES AND FLOWER TIARA

Grand Duchess Victoria -Melita, who is seen below, was married to Ernst-Ludwig, the Grand Duke of Hessen und bei Rhein and thus belonged to the second branche of the family. The couple got married in 1894 and divorced 7 years later, in 1901. In 1905 Viktoria Melita married Grand Duke Kyrill Vladimirovich, the heir to the Russian throne. Grand Duchess Viktoria is the great-grandmother of Grand Duke Georgii the current heir to the Russian throne.

The tiara Grand Duchess Viktoria Melita is wearing, was also been worn by her aunt and mother-in-law; Grand Duchess Alice of Hessen und Bei Rhein, born Princess of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Viktoria Melita's father, Prince Alfred and Grand Duchess Alice were brother and sister.

This diamond-set tiara was given by Queen Victoria to Princess Alice on occasion of her marriage in 1862 to Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse und bei Rhein. Of neo-classical inspiration, it takes the form of a graduated frieze of stylized leaves and flowers, supported by a latticework gallery.

After Ernst-Ludwig, the Grand Duke of Hessen und bei Rhein had divorced Victoria Melita, he married Princess Eleonore of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich. This couple had 2 children; Heriditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus and Prince Ludwig.
